Homes for destitute children under the name ‘SNEHALAYA’ are being run at Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata by MILT since mid-1990s. Each of the 4 cities has a registered charitable trust that generates funds to run the Snehalayas. These homes are registered with the respective state governments under applicable state regulations. Donations to the trusts also enjoy tax exemption under Sec 80(G) of Income Tax Act. Funds
are generated through donations, sponsorships etc.
Snehalayas are well equipped homes with all facilities like refrigerator, TV, washing machine, etc. In these homes, children are brought up exactly the way normal children are brought up. Each Snehalaya is run by two ‘House Mothers’ and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children.
The eligibility criteria for admission of children are male children in the age group of around 6 to 8 years, who do not have parents or with a single parent, from the economically weaker section.
